Best of Brighton’s Clubbing – May 2017

KITTY GLITTER
Fri 5 May
Komedia

Kitty Glitter
The Kitty Glitter Kollective draw upon their extensive experience of the city’s avant garde and DIY queer scenes to present to you the post-gender apotheosis of glamour, style and excess. This inclusive and friendly queer/LGBT-led event features the skills of Saint Violet (Pink Flamingos/Kollaps), Ms. Amanda Robotnic (Thee Pathologies ov Pleasure/Kollaps) and Kate St. Shields (Trashdance/Traumfrau). They’ll be playing a whirling confection of classic disco, Italo, contemporary European electronics, aspirational music for young adults, vogue, house and more. Dressing up is actively encouraged, self-expression desired and being yourself utterly required. Get those dancing shoes on.

ENGLISH DISCO LOVERS
Sat 6 May
Brighton Spiegeltent

Disco Lovers

After three epic sold-out seasons, the Disco Lovers return to their now legendary late night bank holiday sessions at the awesome Spiegeltent. This community group promotes inclusivity and raises money for worthy causes through the medium of music. With their irrepressible mix of joy and humour, they promote inclusivity, raise money for good causes, and of course play epic disco and classic house music all night long! Dress to express. It’s all based around a mantra of: ‘Don’t Hate! Gyrate!’, which are sage words in these troubled times. So dig out those brightly coloured fright wigs and steal some monstrous loon pants from a grandparent – it’s time to strut.

JAX JONES (HOUSE WORK TOUR)
Sat 6 May
The Arch

Jax Jones

After a hugely successful debut US tour drawing to a close, Jax Jones is setting off around the UK. This prolific hit machine is unveiling his exciting new live show for the first time – and bringing with him some very special guests. Since co-writing and co-producing the multi-platinum-selling, award-winning, worldwide chart-topper [I Got You] with Duke Dumont, Jones’ career has continued to soar. Last year he struck a major record deal and released the floor-filling [House Work] with Mike Dunn and MNEK. Then came the astonishing success of [You Don’t Know Me], which sold 1.5 million copies. If you ever wanted to catch a DJ who’s on the verge on conquering the planet, here is your chance!

PATTERNS 2ND BIRTHDAY WITH JOY ORBISON & WILLOW
Sat 6 May
Patterns

Joy Orbison (1)

Incredibly it’s been 730 nights since Patterns opened and set a new path for Brighton nightlife. So obviously, they want to have a bit of a celebration. Getting ready to jump out of a giant cake and sing Happy Birthday are Joy Orbison and Willow. Exploring new horizons for house music, Orbison takes a understated approach to rocking a crowd. There’s snippets of musical references scattered liberally throughout, but he’s in no hurry to resort to cheesy tunes or obvious dynamic devices to get a crowd moving. There’s more booming house and techno from Willow, a resident at Nottingham’s 808 night. An emerging tastemaker, she completes a line-up celebrating two years of excellence in style.

If you don’t know who Andrew Weatherall is, or why this is unmissable, you probably don’t deserve to know. At the other end of the party-starting spectrum, right now there’s a performance of John Cage’s Organ²/ASLSP taking place at St. Burchardi church in Halberstadt, Germany. A more ambient remix of Cage’s earlier ASLSP 1985, it started in 2001 and is scheduled to last 639 years, with the next note change planned for Sat 5 Sept, 2020. This is the exact opposite of how exciting Andrew Weatherall’s DJ sets can be. Support comes from the equally excellent Pablo Contraband and ex-Portishead star, Andy Smith. We told you this would be unmissable.

MR SCRUFF – KEEP IT UNREAL
Sat 13 May
Concorde 2

MR SCRUFF 2

Manchester’s finest proponent of eclectic brilliance returns for an extra special ‘Extended’ session. Acclaimed for awesome releases on labels like Warp, Sirkus, Disorient, Blood & Fire, Mr Scruff comes alive once again. A champion crate-digger, he has rewritten the book on floor-filling – adding a sense of fun and plenty of love. He’ll be doing what he does best, cheekily spanning genres across a marathon set – reggae, Latin, jazz, house, funk and bass music. The problem with putting labels on a performer like this is that it’ll trick you into what to expect… the only thing we can tell you is it will be friendly, upbeat and brilliant.

DJ HAUS & DJ BORING
Fri 26 May
Patterns

dj_haus

For those of you in need of clear, distinct and compelling house music, Patterns give you DJ Haus. One of the hardest working DJs on the scene unleashes a barrage of jackin’ stompers in Brighton this month. This is going to be an evening of speaker to speaker bangers. He’s unafraid to play homage to the greats, but unwilling to compromise in his mission to provide dancefloors with great quality and LFO-heavy dance music. He’s got a bulging back-catalogue, which encompasses the point at which garage, house, acid and bass all meet. It’s life-affirming stuff, and never more so than at 1am when the fancy footwork comes out to play.

THE PROTOTYPES PRESENT: GET HYPE RECORDS
Sat 13 May
The Arch

PROTOTYPES_8_B&W

The Prototypes present a Get Hype Records special, returning to their home city with a seriously heavyweight line up to shake The Arch to its core. Bigger, badder, rougher and tougher than ever before, this time they’ve got a Funktion One (which will blow your socks clean off). In the main room Calyx & TeeBee, The Prototypes with MC Skibadee & Dynamite MC, Erb N Dub Glitch City, DJ Kronical and special guest will be rocking it. There’s some surprises happening in The Hub, with The Terrace being taken over by Rum Drunk DJ Outbreak and MC Choppa Ranx. This is probably what bass music heaven looks like, so get yourself hyped!

Thurs 25 May
Patterns

DJ Format

Armed with new material, lyrical dexterity and undisputed turntable mastery, this pair are out on tour to support their fantastic album – Still Hungry. For fourteen years, they’ve been entertaining crowds from Toronto to the UK. It’s their first full-length album together, and it boasts a wealth of funky, up-tempo and slick beats, coupled with intelligent, savvy lyrics. It also reveals a grittier, harder sound, reflecting the maturity of the two artists, giving their audience some head-bobbing bangers that could rock any venue.
