Looking Sound - Exhibition show

How long has Looking Sound been running for, and how did the whole thing come about originally?

Looking Sound was born in the summer of 2009 and has been putting on events for 14 months. We have a monthly Visual/Audio event at Riki Tik's called 3D Beats, one LIVE art and Visual/Audio event for the Brighton Fringe Festival and one formal Gallery exhibition. A collective made up of three. Francesca, Rob and Sammy each bringing unique attributes to the collective.

How did the artists/photographers go about getting involved with Looking Sound, in a creative sense?

As artists ourselves we use Looking Sound as our performance platform. With each event we pursue the chance to recruit different line-ups both visually and audio wise to support each unique event. As founding members we recruit these artists using different methods such as on line forums, and artist networks. Audio artists performing at 3Dbeats range from DJ's playing breaks, dubstep and drum and bass, plus LIVE electronic sets from producers using different LIVE audio equipment. The visual art is AS important as the audio. The artists we work with use different visual/audio software to perform alongside audio artists or solo depending on their performances. Illustration artists have also performed at our LIVE art Brighton Fringe event, exhibiting at our gallery exhibition using a variety of mediums onto hard board canvases such as pen, paint, graphite, pastels. The photographers used digital SLR cameras shooting on RAW format for the whole live art performance. The photos were then laid out in After Effects via QuickTime Pro to create real time stop frame animations for the Gallery event at the BMC Gallery.

What's happening next for you guys both personally and in terms of Looking Sound?

Sammy: Next I will be concentrating on my existing Video scratch/mix sets performed at 3DBeats. I hold up the residency visual/audio scratch set, using Pioneering AV software to manipulate visuals and audio together using turntable trickery. Also I am looking at how we can keep our current technical equipment up to date.
Rob: I will be developing new and refining old way of interpreting audio into a live visual animation and working on artwork that I feel expresses the feelings I get from music. I'll also be looking to develop the concepts featured at the Live Visual Audio event to take this kind of multi-sensory and multi-disciplinary collection of artists and generations of the creative process to the next level.
Fran: I will be supporting the strategic and creative development of Looking Sound, as we grow as a collective, ensuring we continue to bring audio visual artists from across Europe together under one banner, creating dynamic collaborations. Looking Sound acts as an open platform for established and emerging artists to showcase their work, bringing fresh contemporary work to the forefront, allowing people to interact and experience LIVE audio visual art in one event environment.
All: Looking Sound has some exciting headlining Audio/Visual line-ups coming up in November at 3Dbeats Riki Tiks, Cheeba being one. We are also planning another 'LIVE Visual Audio' event comprising of Live canvas art, Live audio production, LIVE VJ's and visual animations next year, with a follow up event of all the LIVE art to exhibit within a gallery.

Is this the first time you have exhibited in Brighton and what do you think of Brighton when it comes to art and culture?

This was the first time Looking Sound has used a gallery space to exhibit art. But, as mentioned before, have held a live art event where the finished canvases were on show for the remainder of the day at Riki Tik’s bar in Brighton. We also like to feel our monthly 3D beats event held at Riki Tiks is something of a visual gallery which adds a unique edge to the event. VJ's use an assortment of different materials for bringing personal art video projects which adds more diversity to the visual element.

Brighton has an awesome art and music culture and is very supportive and encouraging of new ideas and concepts. Brighton has really provided us with a perfect platform to be able to develop our concepts and events. We are looking at changing the way that people relate audio and visual art within one environment and for us this is an ongoing process. Looking Sound has a lot in store for the Brighton scene and beyond. Are you ready... we are Looking Sound!!
