WILL SELF

What's new About the New Year?

24th January: Komedia.

Strictly speaking, this much anticipated event is simply a conversation between two writers, the renowned, prime time intellectual, Will Self and editor and also Channel Four producer, Matthew De Abaitua. This of course though does not account for the historical and intellectual significance of discourse as an activity. Greek philosophy and the tradition of investigation are recorded as dialogues by Plato and the issues involved are still being grappled with today by anyone involved in humanities and inter-disciplinary study. Although Self’s and De Abaitua’s conversation may be ostensibly confined to comedic, topical questions such as, do Cameron and Clegg share the same photocopier user number?, one suspects that the scope of the conversation will be probe far deeper: Deeper into the nature of government, power and its legitimacy, the mutability of ethics and the human condition. The manner in which they do this is not unlike Plato’s dialogue insofar as, is it embodies the same tradition, a format of interlocution. It is a tradition of great importance if we are ever to hope to understand and rectify the consistent and predictable disappointments of all or our lives or, at the very least, rip the piss out of them. Highly recommended.
