Brighton Fashion Designer Camilla Goldsmith

The Ultimate Saturday Night dress
Feminine, sexy and elegant! Really, what else do we want for our weekend outfits? Brighton based designer Camilla Goldsmith and founder of Glad & Frank tells me how she maintains her integrity and gets her inspiration whilst keeping it all made in England.
You say your clothes ‘bring a smile to your lips and a wiggle to your hips – what makes your clothes do that?
They are sassy and upbeat and this translates to the wearer giving a real feel good factor.
I bet there is a good story behind the label name Glad & Frank, what is it?
I was adopted as a little girl. My adoptive parents gave me unconditional love and they helped to instil in me the qualities of honesty, trust and integrity. There names were Gladys and Frank I owe them a huge amount of gratitude and love.
What are your influences?
Having travelled in South America, India and Asia I have picked up lots of influences. I love the use of vibrant vivid colours in Mexico. I also love the colours and sounds of Cuba; influenced by movement and dance, which shows in my passion for Cuban salsa dancing.
How do you juggle a busy life of being a mum of three and running a clothes design business?
CG: It is hard work but having the children means I need to keep a good work/life balance.
Of all the stages of designing, which is your favourite?
It has got to be the completion, what greater compliment than to see someone wearing your clothes.
What is the perfect night out for one of your fabulous dresses?
I want my dresses to make the wearer feel confident and sexy whatever she's doing. To feel good and look good.
You are meticulous about attention to detail – would you say this is essential to be successful?
It is the attention I give to colour combinations and embellishments on each dress that my customers really appreciate.
What are your top tips for a budding new designer?
CG: Have a clear idea about what you want to do and stick to it. This will help you to create a brand as well as keep you focused.
Where did you study?
I studied at Northbrook College in Worthing
How passionate are you about British made clothes?
I buy my lace in Nottingham and my dyes in Leeds in order to support British based industries. The talent and skills are still here but if we don't support them we will lose them.
You name your dresses? Are these real people or do you have them in mind when you create them? I am totally in love with scarlet Delilah btw!
I had great fun choosing the names for my dresses they are strong iconic sexy women from history because I believe all my customers have this potential.
When orders are made online – how long would it take to create and deliver?
7 - 10 days.
What is your signature as a designer?
Colourful, sexy and fun!
If you were one of your dresses – which one and why?
I would like to think there are aspects of my personality in all of my dresses. I would like them to different moods; they can be provocative, feminine and sensual. All of my dresses are a celebration of femininity.
