Brighton Fashion Week 2010

Brighton’s sixth Fashion Week got off to a steaming start this year at the Hilton Metropole. Dedicated to premier fashion talent, BN1‘s most stylish fashionistas frocked together, chinked champagne, and mingled in their finest!

A generous dose of beautifully cut fashion-uniform-black allowed the colourful, eccentric, brave & bold outfits to shine all the more. Brighton certainly lived up to its arty, creative reputation. Wigs, tattoos, union jack dresses and bags, see-through ball gowns and full length renaissance numbers were being papped by the second. On a warm summer evening, under the toasting lights, the VIP guests were indeed Hot, Hot, Hot!

Apart from the fabulous dressed high-heeled glitterati and the posh nosh from Oki-Nami, the big excitement pre-show was the party-peekaboo-fun photo booth from Say Fromage.
Who knew squeezing into a small space with your best fashion friend could be this much fun?
Once the lights went down and the host said her thank you’s to the all important sponsors we were treated to a glimpse of what to come later in the week. Teenage dancing girls kicked the show off as they pranced and rocked the stage, with their Mum’s proudly cheering them on.
First up were the amazing designs of Brighton based visionary, Jez Eaton. Taking throw-away household items she brilliantly transforms them into beautiful iconic designs. We were privy to a stunning Salt and Balsamic Vinegar Kettle Crisp flavoured suit and hat, a Lidl hoddie and hot pants, a skimpy dress made out of gold condom wrappers and her incredible Victorian dress made out of black umbrellas.

Next was the preview of the opulent world of couture with stunning designs from Andrew Bannister, Joanne Fleming, Playsuit Parlour and Sarina Poppy. Sarina told me earlier that she “likes to be different and I’m no sheep?” The designs did not disappoint. The makeup was breathtaking and the hair, styled by Brighton's Headmasters team was truly inspiring.

The show was a sensational sneak preview and certainly wet our appetite for more.
Liz Bishop, Director of BFW, formally Brighton Frocks, told me, “The fashion talent is beyond anything. It’s been hard work with a great team. I’ve lost my voice and I’m really looking forward to the rest of the shows.”
The fabulous extravaganza finished with the yellow polka dotted high energy tunes from My Bad Sister. After a memorable night we returned home with packed goodie bags to dream about ways to turn our plastic bags into an award-winning dress to wear to Jez Eaton’s show tomorrow night.
