BRIGHTON HALF MARATHON 2011

February sees one of Brighton’s most popular and longest established sporting events taking place in the city – the Brighton Half Marathon. Celebrating its 21st anniversary, the Brighton Half Marathon takes place on Sunday 20th February 2011. General public entries are sold out but there are limited Sussex Beacon VIP Bond Places left at £75 per person – go to www.brightonhalfmarathon.com to secure your place now and be part of the big day.

The first Brighton Half Marathon was organised by Brighton & Hove running clubs to help raise funds for the Sussex Aids Trust, back in 1980. The Trust went on to build The Sussex Beacon, and the two have been intertwined ever since. In 2004 The Sussex Beacon took over the organisation of the race, and the Brighton Half Marathon is now the main fundraising event for the charity, which is one of only two care centres of its kind in England providing innovative services to meet the changing needs of people living with HIV.

A new flatter, faster route was announced for 2011, taking in many of Brighton's iconic sights including the Royal Pavilion, majestic regency architecture, the bracing cliff tops past Brighton Marina, Brighton Pier, West Pier, Hove Lagoon and of course Brighton’s colourful beach huts and the seafront. The main race starts at 9am, with both the start and finish line on Madeira Drive. There are also two 1 mile Youth Races taking place for young runners of all levels aged 8-11 and 12-16, giving them the chance to be chip timed, feel the race day buzz and experience the crossing of a big finish line. Prices to enter the youth races are £2-£3 and entries are still open.

If you are not a runner you can still actively contribute towards the success of the race and raising valuable funds for The Sussex Beacon by joining the volunteering team. Check out the ‘How to get involved’ section on the website or call Lisette Glanvill on 01273 694 222 for more information.
