Okacim Mocne
I recently overheard someone in a pub describe lager as “boys beer”. The insinuation being that lager is a flavourless, flatulent, inferior drink, imbibed by pimpled adolescents who have yet to develop the more discerning, sophisticated palate of the noble real ale fancier. This sort of conceited, condescending, narrow-minded opinion is one I generally subscribe to. So when a fellow boozehound recommended Okocim Mocne I thought I should at least offer the benefit of doubt. This 7.1% (abv) brew is the flagship of the Okocim brewery in Krakow – now part of the Carlsberg empire. It looks and smells like lager but has subtle honey overtones and a broad satisfying malt richness. Okocim Mocne has a robust, burly presence that sets it apart from other so-called premium lagers. If lager is boy’s beer then this is the school bully, the big strapping hairy one, pubescent years in advance of his peers. A dangerous hulk of unchannelled hormones, looking to flush your head down the toilet and pocket your dinner money.
