The Western Front

The Western Front        Food Review

western_front_food_2Set slap –bang in the heart of Brighton adjacent to Churchill square shopping centre, the Western Front provides a welcome haven for tired shoppers and those yearning for a relaxing post-work drink, offering the usual selection of wines and spirits as well as some choice local beers.

The place itself miraculously manages to avoid being your run-of the-mill inner City pub and has a rather charming saloon feel with bricked walls and quirky mismatched wooden tables and chairs which do a lot to make you feel relaxed. This is only enhanced by the friendly staff that will go out of their way to make sure you’re served well. There is plenty of seating outside for enjoying drinks through the summer months but also ample seating inside, especially upstairs where there are windows overlooking Churchill Square – perfect for people watching

As for the food, the pub is very proud of their new chef, who has created a new menu using local ingredients. It’s a menu made up of mains you’d expect such as homemade beef burgers but it has a gastro pub edge with surprises like their homemade chicken and chorizo burger. I decided to order the oak smoked salmon and prawn salad and really enjoyed it – you get a good slab of delicious salmon and the salad was very fresh and tasty which was surprising as pub salads tend to be fairly lacklustre. My dinner companion ordered the special which was a pan fried pork chop with garlic roast potatoes and he enjoyed every bite. Both dishes were impeccably presented, which again, you just don’t expect from a pub in the centre of town. The mains are reasonably priced for the quality varying from around £7- £9 and there are also great sharing plates such as whitebait and calamari for those just after a snack to curb the appetite. The kitchen closes at 8 so although it’s probably not somewhere you’d choose to go for a date, it’s a fantastic place to grab a bite after work or before heading to another bar, given its close proximity to West Street and the South Lanes.
