The one remaining UK girl band are making their way down to Brighton in December, so we thought it was only right and good that BN1 should have a little chat with them before that happened to find out a little bit more. So Andy Hollis put the kettle on and tried to find out more from Rochelle Wiseman......
BN1 – Hello Rochelle – we hadn’t actually realised this but you’ve been in a band and with 19 Artists (Simon Fuller’s celebrity management company) since you were 12 years old. That must be a little surreal surely? Do you still love the life as much as ever? (one of the other members of The Saturdays, Frankie, from the same background had recently been admitted to a rehabilitation centre).
RW – Yes I was in S Club Juniors at 12. You know I’ve had just the best time. I would never want any different.
BN1 – You don’t ever wish for a little more normality?
RW – Well you do everything in moderation. I have a normal family life. When I get home I shut the door and keep away from it all. You need to keep your feet on the ground. We just see each other as normal girls not as celebrities. We’ve had our time of falling out of clubs. It’s ridiculous, every person that writes about that has done exactly the same.
BN1 – What’s it like being a popstar these days then?
RW – It’s everything I wanted it to be. Not as glamorous as the majority of people think though. At the end of the day, it’s a job and it’s hard work.
BN1 – And away from it all, how do you relax?
RW – I do nothing. Have a bath, grab some lunch. As little as possible.
BN1 – So who inspires you in terms of your performance and as a band?
RW – Beyonce is my idol. She always has been.....
BN1 – Well she’s certainly a great performer. There are a lot of great performers out there at the moment, and it would seem in some senses that performance is more important than musical ability at the moment. Particularly with regard to this year’s X Factor. Are you watching it?
RW – Yes, I really like The Risk and Little Mix. Kelly’s category are good too.
BN1 – It feels like it’s beginning to struggle though. A lot of people within the industry seem to be getting a little tired of manufactured acts – what’s your take on that. How do you counter that accusation if it’s levelled at The Saturday’s?
RW – Well it comes from people that don’t know us. People can be very ignorant. Everyone has to have an interview before they get a job, so where does it become manufactured. I think the days of manufactured pop are numbered, but if people think we’re a manufactured band it’s an advantage to us. It gives us the upper hand because we’re businesswomen. We’ve written over half the new album ourselves. We’re involved creatively in the whole process.
BN1 – Okay, moving on to the tour – we believe congratulations are in order as you’ll be performing with a pregnant Una?
RW – Yes though you’d never believe it looking at her. We have bigger food babies after lunch. We can’t wait – she’s on the best form ever and she hasn’t had any sickness. It’s due on my birthday too so at least I’ll remember when to get a card.
BN1 – Who’s going to have the better looking babies, you and Marvin or Una and Ben?
RW – Well me and Marvin look the same so it’ll probably be just like a mini-me. Let’s say Ben and Una as I don’t have a bun in the oven.
BN1 – So tell us a little more about the new album. You’ve described it elsewhere as different and fierce?
RW – Well it’s nice to be in a good place. It’s our little baby and we’ve been working on it for a year and a half. Everything in it has our touch on it – the songs, the artwork, everything.
BN1 – And what can we expect from the show?
RW – We’ve upped everything on this tour. It’ll be a fun night out, it’s all about a good show, and it’s Christmas!
So there we have it. A feisty Rochelle taking on all comers is coming to town on December 6th at The Brighton Centre.
