YOUNG ELECTRICS

With the seemingly millions of hours of music being released every single nano-second, it’s a difficult task to filter out the good from the garbage. So it was a pleasant surprise when we were alerted to the existence of Brighton/London indie-rock band Young Electrics.

Sadly not named after the Las Vegas neon sign manufacturer, these four bright-eyed youngsters are brimming with potential. They’ve just completed constructing their very own studio and seem all set to take the music scene by storm next year.

It’s evident, just from the demo tracks that we’ve heard, that these lads are fantastic musicians, but it’s not going to hinder your cause with the late, great Gary Moore’s son Gary taking responsibility for guitars. The rest of the band, Tom Doyle on vocals, Felix Crowhurst on drums and Ed Pearman on bass, certainly don’t suffer artistically from their lack of rock-god genes though.

Their sound is clearly influenced by good honest rock and roll, but they have a keen percussive and rhythmic edge straining to burst out in most of their songs. There’s a powerful rolling expanse to much of this music that belies the considered and sensitive approach to their lyrics.

The comparisons you could make are almost endless, anyone from Thin Lizzy, The Strokes and possibly even The Cure are all in the frame here, but it’s unfair to pin down what this band are trying to create by labelling them needlessly. It’s clear that Young Electrics are determined to break out of the archetypal Indie mould and develop their own unique style.

It’s true to say that the band is building on ground prepared by some great bands, but they demonstrate the capability to reinterpret the long established laws of rock music whilst still managing to sound welcoming and familiar.

With an EP release promised sometime in the spring and a lot of interest from the good people at Radio One amongst others, it looks like 2012 could be a bright and interesting year for Young Electrics.
