New year’s resolutions. We’ve all made them, right? And chances are, we’ve all broken them too. Because some rules are made to be broken, after all!
Still, there are some resolutions that should be for keeps. Like not to drunk dial that guy you know is wrong for you or to quit watching Eastenders – it’ll only make you depressed. And to sleep more. Because getting a decent night’s kip is one of the kindest things we can do for our bodies and minds. Its effects are far greater than that fad diet you can’t seem to stick to or a sweaty January at the gym before skipping it for the rest of the year.
Research has shown that sleep deprivation can lead to all kinds of mental and physical illnesses. Plus it can affect your work life and your relationships…so not sleeping is definitely something you’ll want to give up in your quest for a “new you”.
Here’s the good news: great sleep is something that you can achieve every single night. You just need the right equipment. And believe it or not, the right mattress topper can impact your sleep massively. So when you’ve had a hard night out bringing in the New Year, well, you’re gonna want a great sleep for the next couple of nights, right?!
Luckily, you don’t need to splash out on a new bed or even a new mattress – after all, you’re probably still recovering from all those Christmas parties. Enter your new sleepy best friend: the mattress topper.
What’s a mattress topper?
Glad you asked. Basically, mattress toppers are a fast and cheap way to get a more comfortable sleep. Used for a bit of extra support and cushioning, they sit on top of your regular mattress. You can also place a mattress protector over the topper if you like, to avoid stains…or just use these handy tips when it’s time for a spring clean.
It should be noted that mattress toppers aren’t a permanent solution; but they can buy you more time before you need to buy a new mattress.
What kinds are out there?
A pretty wide variety, to be honest. And maybe after all that Christmas present shopping, you don’t want to be spoiled for choice.
Don’t worry, we’ll help you to narrow it down! Here’s our favourite types and why:
1. Natural latex
More expensive (but also more environmentally friendly) than synthetic latex, these toppers are firm and bouncy. So if you want a bed you can sink into, this ain’t for you. They are, however, great if you suffer from joint pain and are also very durable. If you don’t have any latex allergies and can put up with the slight smell of rubber at the beginning, this could be a good option for a new beginning!
2. Memory foam
One of the more popular options out there, mainly due to the great support and lovely cushioning they offer. If you want to feel like your bed’s hugging you as you lay down your weary head, you may have met your match. Plus, these bad boys actually prevent motion if your partner’s a tosser-turner type. Bonus. The downside of this is you may not be able to toss and turn yourself; at least until you manage to get your groove in. 😉
Sleep like royalty for less of a price than latex or memory foam. Feather mattress toppers are affordable, incredibly soft and don’t impede movement like memory foam ones might. They can, however, be a little bit noisier as you move around…plus, many people might find themselves allergic to feathers. Poor dears.
4. Polyester blends
As you might expect, these are the cheapest options out there…but you do get what you pay for. They’re less supportive than the other kinds, can be quite hot, and tend to get lumpy over time. On the upside, they’re more suitable for people with allergies and you don’t get any of the odour that you might get with latex or memory foam. Yay!
