At BIMM, there’s nothing we enjoy more than inspiring talented musicians of all ages and backgrounds. With that in mind, we’re very pleased to announce the return of our popular BIMM Brighton Summer Schools for July 2016.

If you’ve no prior knowledge of our Summer Schools, allow us to fill you in. Each year, we run a set of events across our BIMM colleges to help budding musicians and producers hone their live performance skills and musical ability.

We will be running three separate events for rock/metal fans, indie/pop fans and those looking to improve their music production ability in any genre. The first of our classes, the Music Performance Summer School (rock/metal), will run in partnership with Marshall Amplification from Mon 25 July – Fri 29 July.

Further events will include the Radar Music Performance Summer School (indie/pop), which will take place on Mon 1 – Fri 5 Aug. The following week we’ll be welcoming a new class for the Music Production Summer School powered by Ableton. The sessions will run from Mon 8 – Fri 12 Aug.

The Summer Schools last for five days each, during which we give all students the chance to work with our expert tutors on an instrument of their choice. Another favourite feature of the classes is our live performance workshops, which run in the afternoon. Alongside our tutors, students also receive top tuition from special guests who visit daily. We’ve previously had appearances from Kasabian drummer Ian Matthews, Republica’s Saffron, SikTh and Basement Jaxx vocalist Elliot May.

We’ve provided a breakdown of the three BIMM Brighton Summer Schools to give you an idea of what you can expect during each week-long course.

Marshall Amplification Music Performance Summer School (rock/metal):

Our rock/metal Summer School is designed for musicians who want to crank the volume up to 11. Our highly experienced tutors and special guests will help you master the playing techniques used by some of the world’s most famous rock and metal gods. We give all of our Summer School students the opportunity to pick an instrument to work with over the week. If you’re looking to channel the heavy drumming style of Metallica’s Lars Ulrich or the electrifying riffs of Rage Against The Machine guitarist Tom Morello, the rock/metal Marshall Amplification Music Performance Summer School is a must.

Radar Music Performance Summer School (indie/pop):

Looking to improve your indie/pop playing skills? The Radar Music Performance Summer School could be the perfect opportunity for you. During the week, you’ll master the skills needed to excel in the genre. We start every morning with dedicated tuition around your chosen instrument. You’ll then have the chance to form a band with your classmates towards the end of the day and show off your skills in our afternoon live performance workshops. The sessions are intended to improve students’ playing ability with their chosen instrument, and you never know where an opportunity like this may take you. One musician who previously attended our Summer School was Two Door Cinema Club’s live drummer Ben Thompson.

On the final day of both the rock/metal and indie/pop Summer Schools, we ask all students to form a band and rehearse their favourite tracks for a performance in front of their friends and family – you’d be surprised how much all of our Summer School students improve with just one week of expert mentoring!

Music Production Summer School powered by Ableton:

Based in our state of the art Apple Mac suite, our Music Production Summer School is perfect for budding producers. You’ll have the opportunity to work with cutting-edge Ableton software, professional producers, special industry guests and representatives from Ableton to write and create your very own track. On top of this, you’ll also get a better understanding of Ableton Live and the Ableton Push instrument – which is widely used in the music industry today! The Summer School is invaluable for anyone looking to improve their production techniques. Our expert tutors will talk you through the complicated areas of music production, as well as the techniques used by the experts. Drum and bass, house, hip-hop, rock, reggae… we’ll give you the opportunity to explore a music genre of your choice. At the end of the week, it’s show time. You’ll have the chance to perform your finished track live on stage in front of your friends, family and classmates. This fantastic opportunity will allow you to enhance and debut your skills to a broad audience.

On top of expert music tuition and coaching, we also give our Summer School students the chance to win some fantastic prizes, which have been provided by our BIMM partners. You could be in with a chance of winning guitars, amps, gig tickets, cymbals, drums, microphones and more.

Speaking about the upcoming events, BIMM Brighton Summer Schools coordinator Vinnie Lammi said, “I’m very excited to be leading the Summer Schools in Brighton this year. We’ve got some great industry guests lined up, and I know it’s going to be an amazing experience for all the students involved.”

The BIMM Brighton Summer Schools have been a huge success over the years and we’ve no doubt that this year will be any different. Remember, the classes are open to all musicians, providing you’re not an absolute beginner and are over the age of 11. We attract a broad spectrum of talented musicians, so don’t think you’re too old or too young to participate. You can find out more about our Summer Schools here:
