Brighton and The Other Surprise Packages of The Premier League Season So Far

When it comes to the Premier League, there is generally a sense of inevitability that certain names will be battling it out at the top of the table for the all-important trophy. The division is home to some very big clubs with significant financial clout, so it always feels quite easy to predict who is going to be in the running for the title.

However, the league can throw up the occasional surprise, as some sides do gain unexpected results and secure decent positions in the table. Thankfully, one team that has managed that this season is Brighton and Hove Albion.

Great form

As of October 7th, the Seagulls are sixth in the Premier League, having won four out of their opening seven matches. Impressively, they have the same number of points as three other sides, including third-placed Manchester City. BBC Sport details how Brighton’s notable wins include victories against Leicester and Burnley, while they also secured a point at home in a match against Arsenal.

According to current speculation on the outright football markets, defender Dan Burn felt the latter was a fair result, although the site added that Brighton arguably created some of the better chances. At the time of writing, the Seagulls were incredibly priced at 16/1 to finish in the top four this season.

However, while Brighton are clearly having an impact this year, which other sides have also proven to be surprise packages in the league so far?

Strong Performances

Everton are sat just above Brighton on goal difference and are performing very well under manager Rafael Benitez. One of their most eye-catching results was a 1-1 draw at Manchester United, with Andros Townsend scoring his fifth goal of the season in the match.

The Premier League presently sees the new team on the block, Brentford, positioned a place below Brighton in the seventh position. The newly-promoted side have made a real impression on the division so far, winning three, drawing three and losing just one of their matches.

One of their most memorable games was undoubtedly the 3-3 thriller against Liverpool. Pinnock gave Brentford the lead, only for Diogo Jota to equalise shortly afterwards. Mohamed Salah put Liverpool in front in the second half, but Vitaly Janelt struck back just nine minutes later. Curtis Jones then put the visitors back ahead, while Yoane Wissa scored with just eight minutes of the 90 remaining to ensure the game finished level.

Fascinating Few Months Ahead

Some of the giants of the Premier League might already be doing battle at the very top of the table this season, but a few other teams are also clearly having an influence on proceedings. It is exciting to see Brighton battling in the upper echelons, but they are far from the only ones who have enjoyed a good start to the campaign.

It will be intriguing to see how the Seagulls perform in the months ahead, as well as how the likes of Brentford and Everton go on to fare.
