Brighton has a vibrant casino scene, with all three major venues down near the seafront. The Grosvenor Casino in Brighton, located opposite the pier, has recently applied for new premises as well as the right to sell alcohol and provide entertainment. The proposal went before a panel for a discussion on Tuesday, 10th July.
Drinks and Live Music
The proposal would permit Grosvenor Casino to play live and recorded music as well as films 24 hours a day 7 days a week. It would also permit the casino to sell alcohol from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday to Saturday, and 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays.
Licensing officer Mark Savage-Brookes has concerns that the proposal could have a negative impact on crime and cause a public nuisance. He points out that the Grosvenor Casino is in the ‘cumulative impact area’, an area that covers most of the city centre. Residents are also concerned about the impact of the casino getting a 24/7 live music.
Application for the Haunt Nightclub
The Grosvenor has also put forward an application to acquire the neighbouring Haunt nightclub venue and convert it into casino floor space. A similar application was proposed back in April, but the plans to convert the nightclub were refused on Friday, 18th May, claiming the city would lose a live music venue.
To overcome these objections, the Haunt nightclub is moving into the former Dirty Blonde restaurant within the same complex. The restaurant has been vacant for two years. Doing so would mean that Brighton retains its live music venue while Grosvenor would be able to expand. The new application was submitted on Wednesday, 13th June.
Casinos in Brighton
Online casinos like Full Tilt Casino offer a great deal of competition. Remote wagering makes up more than a third of the U.K market. Despite this, Brighton has three major casinos as well as smaller gaming rooms.
The Grosvenor Casino is located opposite the pier and is open 24/7. It has casino classics like American roulette, blackjack, dice games and poker games every night of the week. You can also find a restaurant and sports bar on-site. If the new proposal is granted, this casino will become larger and offer more entertainment and music.
Another major casino in Brighton is the Rendezvous Casino, located further down the seafront at the Brighton Marina. This casino is huge and has a massive dedicated poker room with regular tournaments, cash games and leagues. There are also table games and slots, electronic roulette and more. Rendezvous is well-known for its Waterside Restaurant, which serves exceptional food at reasonable prices. Fine dining and steak courses are on the menu, along with a more casual players menu for those who like their food piping hot at the tables.
Lastly, is the Genting Casino, located on Preston Street off the seafront. The Genting is a small and local casino, away from the crowds, but with not as much going on. If you want a peaceful and quiet place for gaming, this casino still has everything from roulette to baccarat.
