Brighton Dome has received vital support from Arts Council England (ACE) in response to its closure caused by the Covid-19 crisis. The registered arts charity has received £445,000 from the Emergency Response Fund, part of ACE’s allocation for National Portfolio Organisations announced today (7 July 2020).

This additional funding will help protect Brighton Dome’s short-term survival over the summer months. Following its closure in March 2020, 67% of its self-generated income was lost through ticket sales and events. The organisation has a £12.5 million annual turnover, but its 1800 capacity venue is currently unable to re-open for live concerts or performances due to social distancing regulations.

Announced in March 2020, the Arts Council’s £160 million Emergency Response Package is designed to help alleviate the immediate pressures faced by artists, creative practitioners, arts organisations, museums, and libraries over the summer – supporting them as they continue to serve their communities during this crisis and affording them the time to stabilise and plan for the future.

On Sat 5 July 2020, the government announced an unprecedented one-off £1.57bn support package for arts and culture in addition to Arts Council England’s immediate emergency measures. This package recognises the need for further support for the whole sector until physical distancing measures no longer apply.

Each year Brighton Dome & Brighton Festival presents over 600 events spanning music, theatre, dance, comedy, literature, spoken word, visual arts, film, digital and more as part of a year-round programme as well as producing the internationally acclaimed Brighton Festival in May.

Arts Council England is the national development agency for creativity and culture.  By 2030 they want England to be a country in which the creativity of each of us is valued and given the chance to flourish and where everyone of us has access to a remarkable range of high-quality cultural experiences.  Between 2018 and 2022, they  will invest £1.45 billion of public money from government and an estimated £860 million from the National Lottery to help deliver this vision.

Brighton Dome is the south coast’s leading multi-arts venue – a three space, Grade 1 listed building made up of the Concert Hall, Corn Exchange and Studio Theatre at the cultural heart of one of England’s most creative cities. They have embarked on an exciting journey to restore and reunite this historic estate, starting with a major refurbishment of the nationally important Corn Exchange and Studio Theatre. The transformation will restore long-lost heritage features as well as provide new, state-of the art facilities.
