Chamber Opera Chicago tours England this summer, including a visit to The Old Market on Fri 1 August, with their production of Jane Austen’s Persuasion.
This new musical drama follows on from the tremendous success of Chamber Opera Chicago’s tours of England, Chicago, and New York City last year. Now they return to our shores with an original musical adaptation of Jane Austen’s final novel, Persuasion.
Written at the height of her literary career, Persuasion is one of Jane Austen’s most admired novels, telling the story of a woman who has lost at love… but gets a second chance. The production will be touring with 50 artists – singers, dancers, and orchestra members – and will be presenting eight performances in five cities in the UK.
The narrative finds Anne Elliot rejecting a proposal of marriage from the one man she truly loved, Captain Frederick Wentworth. She was persuaded by her godmother that Captain Wentworth was unworthy, but after a separation of nearly a decade, he returns from sea with both rank and fortune. Anne is nearly an old maid and her once rich family is on the verge of bankruptcy. Can Anne win him back? Can he forgive her for breaking off their engagement rather than following her heart? And can their lost love be rekindled?
A musical drama filled with traditional music of the era performed by chamber orchestra and Celtic instruments, this production showcases musical selections from Jane Austen’s own personal manuscripts including classical works by Beethoven, Haydn, Handel and Pleyel as well as Scottish and Irish tunes of her time. World-champion Irish dancers from the Trinity Irish Dance Company, authentic Regency era costumes, sets and beautiful projected imagery of England by projection artist John Boesche will add to the charm of the production. This authentic rendering of Jane Austen’s novel that will transport you back in time.
