England vs Ireland (Twickenham Stadium)

Cultural and Sporting Events to Enjoy in March 2024

With the harshness of winter (hopefully) behind us, the month of March is typically a joyous one for many.

Spring has sprung, which brings with it many cultural and sporting highlights in Brighton and the surrounding areas.

And 2024 is no exception – as this to do list confirms.

England vs Ireland (Twickenham Stadium)

A sporting highlight of the year for many, the Six Nations pits England against Ireland, France, Scotland, Wales and Italy in a quest to be crowned Europe’s finest rugby team.

The Six Nations odds make for happy reading if you are Irish – they are the 1/6 favourites to successfully defend their title, ahead of England (17/2). The rugby odds also make Ireland a red-hot favourite to win the Grand Slam at 4/9.

That requires them to win all five of their games, which leads nicely to Twickenham Stadium in London on March 9. England and Ireland will collide – a game with huge ramifications for the Irish Grand Slam bid and the Six Nations campaign overall.

Echo & The Bunnymen, OMD, Michael Ball, The Smile (Various)

Brighton has long been a hotbed of live music and March is shaping up to be no different.

Echo & The Bunnymen will be playing at Brighton Dome on the first weekend of the month, while fellow 80s artists Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD) will be bringing their unique brand of electro-pop to the same venue on March 26.

Expect power-packed vocals from Michael Ball (Brighton Dome, March 11), while it will be power chords all the way as The Vaselines – one of the late Kurt Cobain’s favourite bands – head to Hope & Ruin on March 24.

If your tastes are a little more contemporary, the likes of The Smile – the side-act of Radiohead stalwarts Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood – are playing the Brighton Centre on March 18, while former Kasabian frontman Tom Meighan is playing an acoustic show at The Arch 24 hours earlier.

Bill Bailey, Ed Gamble, Jerry Sadowitz (Various)

If you could do with a good laugh, March is the month that stand-up comedy comes out of hibernation in Brighton.

Hirsute funnyman Bill Bailey plays two shows at the Brighton Centre on March 5-6, while stage veteran Jerry Sadowitz will be bringing his unique brand of ‘magical comedy’ to Komedia on March 25 and 26.

Komedia will also play host to Michelle de Swarte on March 8 amidst another packed monthly schedule. Meanwhile, in Crawley, Taskmaster favourite Ed Gamble will be stopping by The Hawth for more wry observations on life.

Brighton & Hove Albion Football (Various)

Brighton’s men’s football team continues its quest for a place in Champions League football in March, with a packed schedule that includes home games against Nottingham Forest (March 10) and Manchester City (17).

The ladies’ team, meanwhile, continues their own Super League campaign at pace, tackling Manchester City at the Broadfield Stadium on March 17. They also welcome Manchester United to Brighton on March 10 for a crunch FA Cup quarter-final.

If nothing else, you won’t be short of things to do in Brighton in March!
