Hairspray | Theatre Royal, Brighton | 30 Nov 2015

[metaslider id=33061]As a big fan of both of the film adaptations of Hairspray I was incredibly excited to be invited to the Theatre Royal Brighton to review the current UK tour of the stage show.

The hours flew by in a crazy swirl of colour, dance and amazing musical numbers and everyone else in the audience seemed to be having a great time too, so much so that the night ended with everyone up out of their seats dancing and one of the loudest standing ovations i’ve ever witnessed!

Stand out performances for me came from Tony Maudsley (ITV1’s Benidorm) as Edna Turnblad, a huge presence on the stage in more ways than one, with a wonderfully gravelly voice which I worry might take it’s toll on his vocal cords over the upcoming run! Also Brenda Edwards (Chicago, We Will Rock You, X Factor) as Motormouth Maybelle, blew everyone else out of the water with her amazing voice which truly gave me goosebumps every time she had a number. Another mention has to go to Dex Lee as Seaweed who’s dancing really stood out from the crowd throughout the whole production.

If you’re after a night of incredible costumes, spot on singing and dancing so good it’ll make you start to boogie in your seat, then get down to Theatre Royal Brighton and catch Hairspray from the until the 12 Dec. I guarantee you’ll leave with a big smile and a spring in your step!
