Using bicycles as a mode of transport has become even better in recent years with new changes to The Highway Code benefitting cyclists in terms of prioritising their safety and allowing easier access to the roads.

What are the main changes to the Highway Code that impact cyclists?
Hierarchy of road users
The new hierarchy of road users protects more vulnerable people on the road and that includes cyclists. This means that those at the top of the list get priority and must be given way by those below them in the road users hierarchy. The updated list is as follows:
Cyclists positioning on the road
Cyclists are encouraged to ride in the centre of the lane on quiet roads, in slower-moving traffic and as they approach junctions. Plus, they should remain at least half a meter away from the curb on busy roads with fast-moving traffic. This should make cyclists more visible, therefore keeping them safer.
If someone does try to overtake in a car, try to give way where possible to ensure your and the other driver’s safety isn’t compromised during the manoeuvre.
Are there still dangers while cycling on the road?
Even with these positive changes to The Highway Code, vigilance is still needed by both cyclists and drivers to prevent any accidents that could prove fatal. According to Bolt Burdon Kemp, ‘the most common contributory factor in fatal or serious accidents between cyclists and another vehicle is that the driver of the vehicle failed to look properly’. This shows that basic road safety must continue being practised or danger could be afoot for cyclists.
