International Women’s Day Celebrations come to Brighton

Brighton Women’s Centre (BWC) once again host the city’s largest annual International Women’s Day celebrations in partnership with Brighton Dome and Brighton Museum on Sat 5 March. Women’s safety and gender parity will be firmly on the agenda at this free and inclusive event which aims to celebrate and inspire women as well as raise awareness of BWC.

It sees a marketplace of stalls alongside a specially curated programme of inspiring speakers, activists and innovators, workshops, arts and crafts, causes and campaigns, with fun for all the family.

RISE TOGETHER
10:15am – 11:00am
Brighton Museum MuseumLab

A presentation delivered by RISE Fundraising and Engagement manager Ava Harding, showcasing who they  are, what services are offered, and  some brief information about domestic abuse and ways to get involved. RISE will also be launching a week participation in the Women and Girls Match Fund which is attempting to raise £25,000 for our vital services.

SING YOUR HEART OUT

Brighton Dome Concert Hall Stage

Professional singer, vocal coach and Rainbow Chorus  Musical Director Aneesa Chaudhry returns with a workshop to get everyone singing their hearts out.

YOGA FOR SPACE IN MIND AND BODY

This 45-minute session is suitable for all and will leave you feeling more grounded and centred.

BODY COMBAT TASTER SESSION

Following a successful partnership launch event, RISE and Freedom Leisure want to give you a chance to try out Body Combat. this free taster class for women offers instructors experienced with accommodating all ages and abilities.

UNDERSTANDING, PREVENTING AND REACTING TO PUBLIC SEXUAL HARASSMENT

Award-winning campaigner, Jess is a keynote speaker and facilitator for Sexual Harassment, aiming to ensure all people are able to understand, prevent and react to Public Sexual Harassment. In this talk Jess will explore Street Harassment, and the effect it has on girls, women and non-binary folks across the UK. She will cover the Our Streets Now campaign which has gathered over half a million supporters in twi years.

VOICES OF MOTHERHOOD SATELLITE WORKSHOP

A wellbeing workshop for anyone who identifies as a mother, led by local verbatim theatre-maker Angela El-Zeind. Through conversations, common themes and experiences from the group, participants will learn how movement can be used to explore our own personal stories.

PANEL DISCUSSION: WOMEN’S SAFETY

BWC are committed to keeping the conversation on gender-based violence in the spotlight. Our priority has always been to work to protect and increase the safety of women and girls and we will continue to fight for an end to male violence. This year the panel discussion will focus on women’s safety and in particular how our communities can work together to stop male violence.

COMEDY WRITING WORKSHOP

An introduction to comedy writing for the beginner. Learn how to write short-form material, ideal for those working towards their first five minutes of a stand-up set. Experience the pleasure and enjoyment of being fully present, as you engage with the prompt in hand. Many people find that the creative process helps them to re-connect with themselves.

FREE THE NIPPLE BRIGHTON Q&A WITH THE SASSY SHOW

Feminist Protest movement Free the Nipple Brighton in conversation with The Sassy Show on matters of intersectional feminism, patriarchy and crushing the oppressive male gaze. Free the Nipple Brighton protests against the compulsory sexualisation of women and femme bodies. They’ll be discussing how they subvert the power of sexist double standards and patriarchy through their Nipple Freeing annual marches and continuous activism.
