Vevo, the world’s leading all-premium music video and entertainment platform, is kicking off its 2015 emerging artist series LIFT with singer/songwriter James Bay.
Beginning Mon 19 Jan and over the next eight weeks, viewers can get to know the “Hold Back the River” singer through Vevo-produced original programming including interviews, exclusive performances and behind-the-scenes access which are bespoke to the JAMES BAY story.
Hailed as the music industry’s One to Watch for 2015, the 24 year old burgeoning songwriter from Hitchin can already boast a sold out UK tour, a succession of chart-topping EP’s, winning the coveted BRITS Critic’s Choice award and claiming the No.2 spot in the BBC Sound Poll of 2015. These are impressive accolade of achievements for an artist who won’t even be releasing a debut album until Mon 23 March.
So Bay is obviously thrilled on being chosen as the first LIFT artist of 2015. “It’s a big way to kick off the year being Vevo’s LIFT artist of 2015, as I’ve seen so much of the content from Lorde, John Newman and Sam Smith in previous years. I thought that nothing like this would happen to me”
LIFT is Vevo’s flagship original programming strand which shines a light on carefully selected up-and- coming new artists. From here the acts can boost their careers by reaching new fans and audiences via high quality music programming across all Vevo properties, including Vevo apps, Vevo.com and syndication partners like AOL, DailyMotion, Yahoo and YouTube.
From beginning as a street busker, studying at BIMM and going on to be a BRIT winner, it’s already been an eventful journey for Bay, but he doesn’t forget where he came from. “One of the great things about Brighton is that there are so many opportunities to play open mic nights. They gave me a lot of confidence and it fuels my endless love for playing live. Brighton gave me a million reasons to play live.”.

It’s Vevo’s massive scale and reach that has attracted more than 1,100 brand marketers around the globe since its launch in 2009. LIFT is the cornerstone of Vevo’s emerging artist promotion program. In 2014, the five LIFT cycles included Foxes, Sam Smith, Gorgon City, Ella Eyre and Rixton.
So now he’s bring featured on this incredible platform, are there any other artists Bay can recommend to the world? “I’d recommend everyone keep their ears open for Port Isla. They supported me on my last tour in the UK and I genuinely think their songs are great. Their live set is only getting better. I think they are really going to come through and it will be an amazing moment for music”.
With his debut album penned in Nashville and recorded with acclaimed Kings of Leon producer Jacquire King, the record promises to be an honest and emotive musical storybook of James’s journey up until now. A rich musical tapestry of intimate acoustic-tinged moments, poignant vocals and heady guitar moments that have been inspired by an eclectic mix of artists and songwriters including Bruce Springsteen, Carole King, The Rolling Stones and Ray Lamontagne.
Bay enjoyed his first slots at the bigger UK festivals last year, and it’s given him a taste for more. “Glastonbury was incredible but it kind of went in the blink of an eye. This year I want to play further up the bill, I want to play on the bigger stages. I remember us loading up our van behind the stage at T In The Park and behind us Ed Sheeran was on and you could hear just how massive the stage is. I wanna reach those places.”
James Bay’s debut album Chaos And The Calm is released on Mon 23 March, 2015
