Secret Garden Party is proud to announce a huge wave of musical guests for this summer’s Starship SGP.
Near Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire
EPISODE XVII – A NEW HOPE…
Joining previously announced headliners UNDERWORLD, THE LIBERTINES and FAT FREDDY’S DROP are:
RÓISÍN MURPHY, an artist who delivers a colourful palette of tracks: from leftfield downtempo bangers to pop smashers with Moloko. Her wildly divergent solo career has flitted joyfully from Italian song to powerhouse tracks, and she has stealthily developed into one of Britain’s most innovative artists.
2MANYDJS aka Soulwax aka David and Stephen Dewaele join SGP as favourites who have consistently pushed the boundaries of music into new territory by adopting many different guises. They are widely renowned as one of the most creative remix and producer teams around, with a high-energy live set full of anthems and unrivalled dancefloor classics.
LEFTFIELD make a welcome return as one the most influential and innovative dance music acts of all time. Their legendary performances paired with seminal albums, 1995s ‘Leftism’ and 1999s ‘Rhythm & Stealth’ (both Mercury Music Prize nominees), solidify their position as true pioneers. Among the lights and colour of the Garden, this will be a show not to be missed.
FABIO & GROOVERIDER team up with THE OUTLOOK ORCHESTRA for a massive celebration of jungle and drum and bass, having recently played two nights at London’s Southbank Centre. This will be a momentous occasion, featuring some of the scene’s most iconic and well-loved tracks, presenting a perspective on the scene which very few can.
DE LA SOUL are unquestionable heavyweights in hip hop, having changed the landscape of the genre as we knew it with their debut album, ‘3 Feet High and Rising.’ For an incredible 30 years they have rocked us with inscrutable jazz samplings, whimsically irreverent lyrics, social commentary, light rhythm and laid back rhymes. Absent from the internet for several years due to legal issues they are set to release their first six albums for streaming in March.
PEACHES is an iconic feminist musician, producer, director, and performance artist adored by SGP gardeners. Through music, art, film, theatre, television, and books, she has upended stereotypes and embraced taboos, challenging social norms and patriarchal power structures while championing LGBTQIA+ rights and issues of gender and sexual identity with biting wit and fearless originality.
GRANDMASTER FLASH is a pioneer of hip hop who paved the way for the genre. With depictions of the harsh realities of ghetto life in tracks like ‘The Message,’ they led the way for socially conscious protest rap as well as new techniques in sampling and scratching techniques.
secret Garden Party also welcomes BBC Sound of 2023 pick BIIG PIIG, plus EVERYONE YOU KNOW, WARMDUCHER, BABYQUEEN, LAVA LA RUE, and DESIRE across this mighty starfleet of sonic fighters this summer and a whole host of new space invaders.
MORE FOR 2023:
By popular demand, this year sees the return of the incredibly competitive Dance Off, where contestants vie for the prestigious top award. There’s Chai Wallahs, Feast of Fools, Secret FM, Small World, The Drop, The DogHouse, The Living Room (acoustic), the (now infamous) secret bar, an even larger Pagoda dance stage overlooking the Lake, and a new version of the Collosillyum, reborn as The Circus Maximus and hosted by renowned inclusive party organisers He.She.They.
This year also sees a fun-packed north field with parades, wild swimming, immersive theatre, aerial displays, and luxe boutique camping experiences. As ever, there will be the iconic paint fight and fireworks spectacle in the main arena, plus talks, debates, art installations and many silly games.
With highly acclaimed live acts to a full DJ line-up (plus a very healthy stack of DnB on offer) for 2023 there’s certain to be intergalactic space stations to suit all tastes.
This year there’ll be some changes to the Garden, including switching to a compost loos solution. The SGP is also introducing a revolutionary new waste management system that will turn non-recyclable waste into energy.
Built around the 2023 theme: ‘A NEW HOPE’ Secret Garden Party is taking its cue from the greatest sci-fi minds, weirdos and heroes of the past to take a bold leap forward. It aims to teleport gardeners on an adventure through space, time, and other dimensions armed with not just one of the best crews assembled, but with some of the most glittering musical guests in the galaxy.
Secret Garden Party is also offering brand new Boutique accommodation on site, meaning that the whole lake will be accessible to all this year, with planned activities, art, happenings, and space oddities dotted across the beautiful garden.
ELYSIUM Elysium offers luxury accommodation for couples (or pairs of friends) including airstreams, Safari Suites (with ensuite shower and toilet facilities), Suitehuts (with en-suite facilities and lockable wooden doors), luxury yurts and a selection of bell tents (Lotus Belles, Emperor Bell Tents and 5m Bell Tents).
XANADU Xanadu will be filled with luxury accommodation options for groups of friends – primarily larger, shared structures set closer to the arena for those who want to keep the party alive, including tipis, bell tents, yurts and Lotus Mahals.
TILTED TOWERS… A separate option to Boutique, Tiltled Towers allows revellers to get their party started sooner without having the hassle of pitching a tent on arrival. Itprovides pre-pitched empty canvas bell tents and tipis and access to vacuum loos and complimentary showers
This year, Boutique (Elysium or Xanadu), supports the Humans for Rights Network, with each booking automatically including a donation to charity – within the advertised price. Humans for Rights Network is a grassroots human rights organisation, set up to facilitate an increase in opportunity for people seeking safety to report rights violations and access justice. The intention is to ensure that individuals claiming asylum in the UK are heard, listened to, and have access to justice.
Secret Garden Party will confirm additional charities for 2023 in due course. Meanwhile a huge thank you to last year’s Gardeners whose donations were as follows:
Last year’s ticket holders supported Last Night a DJ Saved my Life raising thousands by donating £1 per ticket. This paid directly for the build of 6 new water wells in Africa. Large donations were made to Humans for Rights Network –https://www.humansforrights.org/ from the sales of Boutique camping accommodation. This enables them to (digitally) document rights violations against refugees, asylum seekers and migrants throughout Europe in order to force accountability and justice. Giving access to reporting mechanisms directly to witnesses and victims of these violations.
Funds we also donated to The Us Charitable Trust https://www.theuscharitabletrust.org/ from contributions given by guests of artists at the party. The Trust supports young people from areas of deprivation and refugees to enable them to have opportunities in education and life experiences. Smaller donations went to a number of local charities and SGP worked with My Black Doghttps://www.myblackdog.co/ to provide mental health support at the festival as well as raising awareness of their cause.
