Your parents probably lectured you about money before you left for Uni and you zoned out and didn’t hear a thing. The NatWest Student Living Index 2018 showed that one third of students aren’t budgeting. But with over half of students being highly stressed over money management, is it worth being careless and adding to the stress of studying? If you can commit to following some simple tips to save the pennies whenever possible, you could go all term without having to see a single packet of instant noodles.
Know how much of your money you’ll need to pay your rent for the term and then make an estimate for what you’ll have to spend on all other essentials such as food, supplies for study, phone bill, travel costs, household supplies and anything that isn’t included in your rent e.g. electricity, Wi-Fi etc. Then you can see just how much money you can spend when and wherever you’d like, which when stuck to is far more freeing than fretting over whether you can afford that tin of beans a few months down the line in Poundland.
There are also discounts out there for you in every other store just for being a student. A NUS Extra card – now called TOTUM – can be purchased online where you can quickly make back the money spent on it through the discounts you’ll use. Another alternative, UNiDAYS, only requires you to sign up online. Always ask in stores whether they provide a discount, as sometimes it isn’t clearly advertised.
The chances of you breaking or losing your phone on a night out are likely. While it can be annoying to dish out more money on something you’ve already purchased, insurance is a must. Check whether your items are covered by your parents’ insurance plan if they have one, and if not, you can still cut the costs by grouping together with housemates to purchase your insurance plan.
Stick to weekly shopping and cook for yourself. Buying a quick meal on your way to and from classes is too easy – especially when you leave the store with a bag full of food after you only went in for noodles – but when it becomes a regular occurrence you’ll find that you’ve spent a small fortune. If you buy cheap ingredients every week and prep your own meals, you’ll not only be saving money but also picking up a new skill while you’re at it.
Make sure you shop wisely! Don’t believe the myths that branded food tastes better than that plain white box of bran flakes hiding in the corner of the store. Unbranded food is sometimes made in the same factory as branded, the only difference is the packaging and price. What time of day you shop also makes a difference. If you’re in need of a snack, then visit stores before they close. Items due to surpass their sell-by date are all marked down to cheaper than cheap prices.
