Launched in Brighton in 2018, Shiv Textiles is a contemporary textiles company that crafts with a conscience. This independent, women-led business has a focus on sustainability as well as originality.
The company was the vision of founder, Siobhan Martin. Working as an intern in the textiles and fashion industry, whilst studying at the University of Brighton, Siobhan was alarmed at the amount of waste that was produced. She knew she had to do something about it, to design in a fundamentally different way to prevent this unsustainable practice within the industry.
Siobhan started contacting British mills & factories and buying their deadstock by the kilogram, including yarns, zips, threads, leather and buttons. Siobhan and her team use these materials to create handwoven cushions, blankets and scarves. Any leftover fabric from these products gets turned into purses and pouches making them a zero-waste company. Furthermore, all the products are designed, woven, sewn and finished in Brighton.
Slowly and organically the business has grown to the point of specialising in ethical woven textiles, short courses and workshops, unique contemporary homewares and lifestyle products that are designed to educate customers and complement their environments.
The studio aims to rediscover how local businesses can thrive alongside global manufacturing companies. Siobhan explains, “the key to supporting our community is producing locally, while inspiring and investing in creative community-driven craft workshops. I am committed to celebrating the art of weaving whilst simultaneously reinventing elements of the craft to make my pieces unique.
“This way of creating products never gets boring as you have to think on your feet and design with what you have. Every box of up-cycled materials that lands in my studio is a small personal victory to me.”
Siobhan is now looking to grow her business and help spread the philosophy that industry can be conducted ethically, and in a way that benefits local communities. She has started a crowdfunding campaign to help her thriving business reach the next level. If you’d like to support this wonderful local venture, please go to Shiv Textiles’ crowdfunding page.
