Things to do in Granada

If you are done looking for Granada accommodation and are now simply looking for some things to do in the area, then you are in luck because this place has some amazing activities and things for everyone to see and do. There’s a ton of history here, a history that is Spanish, Islamic, and Catholic as well, which means you have three cultures to explore.

But with so much soaked into one city, finding the best way to spend your limited time in Granada can be extremely difficult. Thankfully, this article is going to ensure that you are ready to go with some of the top activities in Granada, and after reading it, it might help you narrow things down a bit.

The Stronghold of Alhambra

Those who love their history know that Spain was ruled by the Moors and that was the subject of the Christan Reconquista in Iberia. The stronghold of Alhambra is a spectacular piece of Islamic history and culture, and after the Reconquista, it became the seat of power for the Royal Court of Ferdinand and Isabella- and the place where Christopher Columbus got endorsement to sail for what would be the new world.

It also hosts the Palace of Charles V as well, which was commissioned to pay tribute and respect to Ferdinand and Isabella, and it is covered in art pieces, beautiful columns, and sculptures that are well worth a visit for any art lovers that happen to be on the trip.

It is a restored and respected place, and being able to see it and know that such history exists is important for everyone. No matter who you are or what culture you follow, there’s a part of the story of the Alhambra that will speak to you without any question.

Visit The Nature Decorated Carmen De Los Martires

Even though it is right next to the very busy Alhambra, the Carmen De Los Martires is a place to relax and escape from the crowds of the stronghold. It is very quiet and secluded and comes with a blend of English, French, and Moorish elements in its architecture. Additionally, it has very peaceful gardens filled with trees, flowers, plants, and ponds. It’s a place that is perfect to wander around and shield yourself from the sun, the crowds, and the hustle and bustle for a bit.

See Gypsy Life In Sacromonte

Along with some of the best views in Granada, you can learn about the gypsy and Roma culture of Spain here. The gypsy people of Spain hid away here in caves to preserve their culture and their way of life, and now they have emerged to claim the entire hillside for their own. You can listen to the finest Flamenco and the dance style of the Zambra Mora, which evolved from the traditional Moorish dances.

You can also travel to the Museum of Sacramonte and see the story of the people who lived here, and what the gypsies had to do to stave off extinction for their culture. It’s a very interesting tale, and something anyone even remotely interested in the gypsies of Granada should check out.

Climb The Mirador de San Nicolas

If you like to work out and want to get your physical body pumping as well as your mind, then you need to climb the Mirador de San Nicolas. It is a place that takes a 45 minute climb (or a bus ride to the top which isn’t as rewarding), but the views from the top of the hill are worth it.

Additionally, you will be going through the old Arab part of the city called the Albayzin, as well as the Plaza de San Nicolas and the church of San Nicolas as well, so the 45 minute walk will take you through some of Granada’s hot spots. Finally, once you get up to the hill, you can look down at the Sierra Nevada Mountains, and enjoy the music and the food that is available at the top.
