Top 10 TV and film releases to stream this May

As the world outside remains locked down, we have to look inward for our daily dose of entertainment. Here is a list of the top ten television series and films out this month to enjoy from the comfort of your home.

10. Isolation Stories

Isolations Stories

Isolation stories are four 15-minute dramas have all been created under lockdown. Four short dramas representing life in lockdown and what families are going through after weeks of solitude. The name is not only a clue to the subject matter of the four short dramas but refers to how they were created. Actors like Sheridan Smith and Robert Glenister and their families did all the filming themselves in their own homes, with a director giving advice via Zoom.

I Know This Much Is True

Based on the bestselling novel by Wally Lamb, written and directed by Derek Cianfrance, and starring Mark Ruffalo, this limited series follows Dominick Birdsey as he strives to care for his twin brother, Thomas while uncovering the truth about his own family history. I Know This Much Is True is a family saga that follows the parallel lives of identical twin brothers in a story of deception, sacrifice and forgiveness set against the backdrop of 20th-century America. Three-time Oscar nominee Mark Ruffalo stars as twin brothers Dominick and Thomas Birdsey. It also stars Oscar-winner Melissa Leo, Rosie O’Donnell, Archie Panjabi and Imogen Poots.

The Eddy is an upcoming American series created French musical drama television miniseries directed by Damien Chazelle and written by Jack Thorne.  Original music is written by Glen Ballard and Randy Kerber. The series is set in Paris where a French club owner deals with the daily chaos of running a live music venue in the heart of Paris. The Netflix series from the director of Whiplash and La La Land follows Moonlight’s André Holland as the immature club owner. It also stars Joanna Kulig, Amandla Stenberg and Tahar Rahim.

7. Upload

Upload is a Prime Video original series created by Greg Daniels-best known for his work on The Office and Parks and Recreation. The premise of the story is set in 2033, where people can be “uploaded” into virtual reality hotels run by 6 tech firms. It follows the story about Nora who lives in Brooklyn and works customer service for the luxurious “Lakeview” digital afterlife and an L.A. coder Nathan who’s self-driving car crashes and his girlfriend uploads him permanently into Nora’s VR world.  Greg Daniels came up with the idea several years ago while working as a staff writer on Saturday Night Live and it stars Robbie Amell, Andy Allo, Allegra Edwards, Zainab Johnson and Kevin Bigley.

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Kimmy Vs the Reverend

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Kimmy Vs the Reverend is an interactive Netflix Film where Kimmy sets off on her greatest adventure yet and the viewer gets to decide how the story goes. In this special, the viewers will be able to make decisions on behalf of the show’s characters and guide them down separate story branches where they will get different endings. The show stars Ellie Kemper, Daniel Radcliffe, John Hamm, Jane Krakowski, Tituss Burgess and Carol Kane.

5. Rick and Morty (Season 4; part B)

Rick and Morty is an American adult animated science fiction sitcom conceived by Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon for Cartoon Network’s late-night programming segment Adult Swim. The series follows the catastrophes of cynical mad scientist Rick Sanchez and his good-hearted but weak-willed grandson Morty Smith, who split their time between family and interdimensional ventures. The 4th season consists of 10 episodes. The first five episodes of the season aired from November 2019, while the remaining five will begin airing in the UK from 7 May.

4. Schitt’s Creek (Season 6)

Schitt’s Creek is a Canadian sitcom created by Dan and Eugene Levy that originally aired in 2015. It is set to release the sixth and the final season in Netflix UK on Thursday, 14 May. This award-winning show is the story of a wealthy Rose family who is defrauded by their business manager making them lose all their money. They’re compelled to relocate to Schitt’s Creek, a town they once bought as a joke. They go from living in a mansion to sharing two rooms in a poor motel and the sitcom acquires its beauty from them slowly connecting to their new surroundings and people throughout the seasons. The casts consist of Eugene Levy, Catherine O’Hara, Dan Levy, Annie Murphy, Chris Elliot, Jenn Robertson and Emily Hampshire.

4. Brassic (Season 2)

Brassic is a hit British Comedy Series that is returning this May with its second season. The 1st season of this series premiered in August 2019 and it follows the lives of Vinnie and his five friends as they live their lives in the town of Hawley. The cast consists of Joe Gilgun, Michelle Keegan, Damien Molony, Tom Hanson, Aaron Heffernan, Ryan Sampson and Parth Thakerar.

2. Hollywood

Hollywood is a new limited series created by Ian Brennan Ryan Murphy that follows a group of ambitious actors trying to make it big in Los Angeles post Second World War. Each character contributes a unique glimpse behind the Golden Age of Hollywood and highlights the unfair policies, power dynamics, and prejudices across race, gender and sexuality that continue to this day. It consists of an ensemble of David Corenswet, Darren Crisis Laura Harrier, Joe Mantello, Dylan McDermonnt, Jake Picking, Jeremy Pope, Holland Taylor, Samara Weaving, Jim Parsons, and Patti LuPone.

Space Force is an upcoming comedy series created by Greg Daniels(The Office US, Parks and Recreation) and Steve Carell (The Morning Show, The Morning Show). Paul King, the man behind the camera for the Paddington movies, is directing two episodes of Space Force. This show follows a group of people tasked to establish the sixth branch of the US armed services. It stars John Malkovich, Ben Schwartz, Diana Silvers, Lisa Kudrow and Tawny Newsome. Howard Klein (The Mindy Project, Parks and Recreation) is also an executive producer of this show.
