Towner Invite applications for East Sussex Open 2016
Now in its seventh year, East Sussex Open aims to showcase the best visual artists. Submissions are now being invited for the annual Exhibition at Eastbourne’s Towner from across the East Sussex region – from Rye to Brighton and Hove.
Presented for the first time in Towner’s second floor gallery, East Sussex Open 2016 will offer artists and gallery visitors a unique opportunity to present and view works by artists at every level of their career, from new talent to established figures. Joining Towner’s Head of Exhibitions, Brian Cass, on the 2016 judging panel includes guest selectors Jenni Lomax, Director of Camden Arts Centre, London and award-winning London based photographer and film maker Melanie Manchot.
Running on Sat 16 July – Sat 25 Sept, East Sussex Open 2016 is open to artists and makers over the age of 18 working in any media who live or work in the East Sussex County Council area including Brighton and Hove. Artists can apply with work in any medium such as sculpture, painting, photography, print, video and digital and drawing. Work entered must have been produced since January 2013. The deadline for entry is Sunday 20 March 4pm.
Last year the East Sussex Open saw 30,000 visitors across 10 weeks. The Open was established in 2009, when the Towner’s new building opened, to offer talented locally-based artists a chance to show and sell their work on a national platform. ‘We were delighted to have had over 30,000 visitors to East Sussex Open last year which confirmed the continuing success of the exhibition and Towners commitment to showcasing regional artists and supporting their creative talent. I’m sure we will receive submissions that are as strong as they are varied. The challenge of making a final selection will not be an easy one. It promises to be a fascinating exhibition.’
As Director of Camden Arts Centre since 1990, Jenni Lomax has established an international programme of exhibitions, residencies, education projects and public events. London-based Melanie Manchot’s photography, film, video and installation works have been widely exhibited, including at Whitechapel Gallery and The Photographers’ Gallery, London. Her new solo exhibition open at Towner on Sat 16 April. Both Lomax and Manchot’s wide knowledge of national and international contemporary art practices will bring exciting and original perspectives to this year’s selection process.
